STUDENT STATEMENT

What does it mean to be an artist?

To be an artist, is more than the ability to make exceptional pieces of art. Anyone can make art. Van Gogh's Starry Night, wouldn’t become any less staryy if he had taken out a few stars. Michael Jackson’s moonwalk wouldn’t be any less iconic if he had missed a two touch minutes before. Whitney Hustons “I want to dance with somebody” wouldn’t make anybody  sit in silence if she sang a note off key. The Greats had more than just their talent to make them  good artists. It’s their emotional connection between their artistry and the audience that make them an artist. To have a story to tell through the things they make. Emotion is felt and can be related between the composer and the spectator. For me, it’s giving my art to those I love and appreciate. I want to make art for someone and when they look at it, they feel a relation to themselves in the piece. Weather that be a reminder of a warm memory that makes them at ease and joyful. Or a remembrance of a distasteful one that makes them feel seen and less alone. Art is a form of human communication that expresses emotion with others and those who possess the power to effectively display it, are artists.

Beyond My Art Form, What Has Art Done for Me?

I truly consider myself to be one of these artists. Art itself has such a big influence in my life, outside of the days I spend specifically working paint brush to canvas. The world has so much inspiration that comes at every corner because that’s what most art is driven from, life. Life and art collide with each other at the end of the day. Especially in mine. I've helped my father pick the perfect complimentary tone for our new furniture. I am more descriptive with my writing because I honestly just observe more and pick up on fine details. I don’t even remember the last time I went to a nail salon because i've always liked doing my own nail designs. These little things that I do differently are thanks to my creative abilities. The ability to pick up on color, perspective, design, and other elements of what make a good artist, have opened my eyes to the world around me. In general my artistry and creative enhancement has made my life a better one to live in.

Where Did it Start and the Inspiration?

My life has always been this way though. I'm not going to be self deprecating when I say that I’ve been called an “artist” all my life. “Kaylee the artist”, “Kaylee the singer”, “Kaylee the dancer”, “Kaylee the writer”, etc. I think It stems from the fact that I have, and always will, like to try new things. The world as I knew it was so big and large in my 5 year old head that I needed to explore every aspect of it and that same ideology stands to this day. But you obviously can’t be an accapella singer/photographer/ zumba dancer all at once. So once I started to grow up, I refined my  creative outlets that I was truly passionate about. Letting go of the things that didn't inspire me and therefore putting more effort, time, and persistence with the arts that truly represented myself. A way to express my emotions without telling them because I’ve never been an outspoken and extraverted kid. One of those being, handcrafted art. Taking a step back from some of these different creative outlets, didn’t make me any less of an artist though. It actually did the exact opposite. The curious child inside me, wants to explore printing, collaging, oil pastels, watercolor and all other types of media. And on top of that, explore ideas and concepts that are restricted with word of tongue. There is no point in time where someone has completed becoming an artist. There is only becoming a better artist with exploration, which truly inspires me to continue looking for new ways to make something out of nothing. And to which I am proud to wear that title of “Kaylee the Artist”.
